ICAR 2026 - Essential Information

International Conference on Aeolian Research (ICAR XII)
13 - 17 July 2026, Swakopmund, Namibia
Venue
"Swakopmund - where the desert meets the ocean"
The conference will be held at The Strand Hotel in Swakopmund, Namibia.
Swakopmund is the tourist centre of Namibia offering a variety of restaurants, activities and accommodation options. A bustling town with shops, markets and a steady tourist trade. The climate is exceptionally dry in July with an average monthly low temperature at night of 10°C and an average daytime high of 26°C. However, the collision of the cold Benguela current from the Antarctic with the hot desert air sometimes produces a coastal fog that usually burns off by mid-morning.

Accommodation
Delegates will need to organise their own accommodation. Swakopmund offers a wide variety of options from 5 star hotels and mid-range guesthouses to more simple municipal bungalows and independent hostels. July is the beginning of the high tourist season and so we encourage you to make accommodation reservations as early as possible.

Getting There
Swakopmund is not served directly by international or regional airlines. To get to Swakopmund we advise flying into the international airport in the capital city of Windhoek (350 km east of Swakopmund) or the airport in Walvis Bay (50 km south of Swakopmund). Compared to Walvis Bay, Windhoek offers direct flights from Europe and the Middle East, with more frequent flights from Johannesburg and Cape Town.
