New Living on a Changing Planet podcast series launched to unite climate change and mental health

Estimated reading time:

Living on a Changing Planet is a new podcast series exploring people's emotional responses to climate change. Produced by Carter Powis (SoGE doctoral researcher and climate scientist), and Patrick Kennedy-Williams (a clinical psychologist), together they tackle the topic that's been missing from the climate conversation: whether you're an energy worker who's facing the loss of your job and ability to provide for your family, a youth activist afraid of what the future holds, or a nature-lover grieving the rapid ongoing destruction of our biosphere - how do you learn to live with it?

Carter and Patrick sit down with world-leading experts on climate change and the energy transition (including Al Gore, SoGE's very own Professor Myles Allen, and many others), explore the thoughts and feelings that keep them up at 2 A.M. and talk about how they manage them productively. No political agenda. No alarmism. Just open, fact-based conversation about what it means to be a human being living on a changing planet.

Commenting on the launch of the series, Carter and Patrick said:

"We started Living on a Changing Planet in recognition that a huge number of people are deeply concerned about climate change, but that there seems to be a strong social stigma to admitting that you're feeling anxiety, grief, or even despair about it. We hope that by sitting down with world-leading experts and having open discussions about how climate change makes them feel, we'll help combat that social stigma, arm our listeners with tools to have better conversations about climate in their personal and professional lives, and (if they're interested) provide an opportunity to learn some things about climate science too!"

Carter graduated from SoGE's MSc in Environmental Change and Management in 2017 and is currently doing a DPhil in Geography and the Environment through the School's Environmental Change Institute. Supervised by Cameron Hepburn and Steve Smith, his doctoral research looks at the physical science and economics behind carbon dioxide removal. Patrick completed his doctorate at the Oxford Institute of Clinical Psychology Training and Research, graduating in 2016
