Dr Lisa Wedding has been awarded the Cuthbert Peek Award for pioneering marine remote sensing research in the 2023 Royal Geographical Society (with IBG) honours.

Dr Lisa Wedding, Associate Professor in Geography, is the recipient of the Royal Geographical Society's (RGS) Cuthbert Peek Award. The Cuthbert Peek Award recognises "those advancing geographical knowledge of human impact on the environment through the application of contemporary methods" and is part of a series of annual awards from the RGS that recognise extraordinary achievement in the field of geography.

The Royal Geographical Society, founded in 1830, is the world's largest learned society and professional body with over 16,000 global fellows advancing Geography. The Society has honoured pioneering geographic research by Sir David Attenborough, Alfred Russel Wallace, and others.

At the University of Oxford, Dr Wedding is the Principal Investigator of the Oxford Seascape Ecology Lab, an Associate Professor in School of Geography and the Environment and a Tutorial Fellow of Worcester College. Her research seeks to advance the theoretical foundation in the emerging field of seascape ecology and develop novel techniques to map and model change in the ocean. The Cuthbert Peek Award recognises her significant contributions to advancing contemporary methods for marine environmental remote sensing in the past 15 years.

Speaking about this award, Dr Wedding said: "I am honoured to receive the RGS Cuthbert Peek Award. This recognition is shared with all of my colleagues that have worked towards advancing our research applications to support marine management and conservation. Working together has allowed for us to bring the diverse perspectives needed to develop novel techniques to address complex marine environmental problems."

On Monday 5 June 2023, Dr Wedding will be attending the RGS's annual Medals and Awards celebration day in London, where she will be presented with this award by the Royal Geographic Society's President. This year the Royal Geographical Society medals and awards recognise 23 outstanding contributions to geographical research, teaching, and public engagement.
