Dr Jocelyne Hughes

Before coming to the School of Geography and the Environment in 2017, Jocelyne spent a number of years in the University's Department for Continuing Education. Previous academic posts include a college lectureship in Physical Geography at St Catherine's College, Oxford; Research fellow at University College London; University Lectureships at the University of Reading and the University of Melbourne, Australia. Jocelyne holds a degree in Geography from the University of Cambridge and a PhD in plant ecology from the University of Tasmania, Australia, where she was a Commonwealth Scholar. She was Course Director of the MSc in Water Science, Policy and Management until the end of 2020 and has been a Researcher from 2021 onwards. Jocelyne's research focuses on understanding and quantifying the ecology, hydrology and management of wetlands and freshwater ecosystems.

Jocelyne has carried out field investigations in a diversity of freshwaters in Tunisia, Australia, Antarctica (Australian National Antarctic Research Expedition), Guatemala, and the UK, in order to answer a range of research questions. Current projects are:

• Marley Fen, Wytham Woods - from 2010 and ongoing.
• Disentangling the triggers of sewage fungus in multi-stressed catchments with Wessex Water - 2021 onwards; Co-I with Michelle Jackson, Wessex Water-funded.
• Cumulative impacts of multiple stressors: improving temporal and biological realism - 2021-24; Co-I with Michelle Jackson, NERC-funded.
• Impacts of plastics on ecology: Modelling and distribution of plastics in the River Thames with a view to enhancing UK Policy - 2019-20; Strategic Priorities Fund with Paul Whitehead et al.

Supervise MSc and MPhil research projects.
