A research programme led by SoGE Professor Jamie Lorimer has received renewed funding from the Canadian Institute for Advanced Research (CIFAR).

The programme on Humans and the Microbiome brings together social scientists and biologists to redefine well-being and health from a microbiome-centric perspective. It will be supported with c. £5m in funding for another five years, and will include workshops, research projects, and impact activities.

Prof Lorimer said “We are especially interested in the interconnected microbiome that flows between people, and between people and the wider environment. We will be exploring the idea of microbioception – the different ways in which people perceive the microbial world – spanning microbial experiences from gut feelings, to stinky cheese, to petrichor (the smell of rain on dry ground).”

Stephen Toope, President & CEO of CIFAR said “On behalf of CIFAR, I would like to congratulate the members of these programs. Their renewal reflects a shared commitment to a long-term vision and celebrates the transformative potential of their research to advance global knowledge.” Read more.
