SoGE alumna's film 'On the Brink' triumphs at 2023 Women in Adventure Film Awards, spotlighting climate change's impact on glaciers
School of Geography Alumna Lucy Temple and Rose Aldridge’s award-winning short film, 'On the Brink', documents the dramatic effects of climate change on small glaciers in the Bernese Oberland, Switzerland, aiming to connect viewers emotionally with the growing fragilities of the alpine environment.
'On the Brink', a short film about climate change and glaciers made by an alumna of the School of Geography and the Environment, has won the 'Climate Action' category in the 2023 British Mountaineering Council's Women in Adventure Film awards, at Kendal Mountain Festival.
The film follows the experience of Rosie and Lucy living and working on the side of the Blüemlisalp glacier (in the Bernese Oberland, Switzerland) for the summer, documenting the changes they see to the landscape in front of them. In particular, the film reflects on the growing fragilities of the alpine environment and seeks to shed light on the dramatic effects of climate change on small glaciers.
Lucy Temple, an alumna of the School of Geography and the Environment and also one of the directors of the film, said that “the main aim for On the Brink was to connect people with the changes happening right in front of our eyes and make them feel something about it. We're very grateful to win an award like this, and hope it allows the message of the film to reach as many people as possible. In the future, we're really keen to create more films that combine fun adventure filmmaking with a hard-core factual and scientific basis."
On the Brink was directed by Oxford SoGE alumna (Geography BA, St Catherine's College) Lucy Temple, in collaboration with Rosie Aldridge from the University of Stirling.
