Professor Gillian Rose has been awarded the Royal Geographical Society (with IBG) Victoria Medal for conspicuous merit in research in geography.

The Royal Geographical Society (with IBG) medals and awards recognise 24 different people or organisations for their outstanding contributions to geographical research, fieldwork and teaching, and public engagement.

Gillian said: "I’m delighted to be awarded the Victoria Medal. In the current moment, as we face multiple threats to the conduct of care-full forms of human knowledge creation, it seems more important than ever to assert the importance of geographers’ skills of crafting evidence-based understandings of the world, aware of the high stakes of that work. I am truly honoured by this award’s suggestion that I have contributed in some way to that vitally important project."

Gillian is a cultural geographer and although her empirical research interests have shifted over time, a central theme has been the techniques and politics of knowledge production about places.

The medals and awards will be presented at a ceremony at the Society in London on Monday 2 June.
