Integrating Science and Traditional Knowledge in the Amazon
The School of Geography and the Environment is leading interdisciplinary research in the Brazilian Amazon that seeks to understand the long-term relationships between humans and ecosystems and strengthen conservation and restoration efforts.
The Amazon +10 project combines biodiversity science, genomics, ecology, archaeology, digital technologies, and social sciences with the knowledge of local Indigenous and Quilombola communities.
Through collaborative approaches, the researchers are documenting and monitoring Amazonian biodiversity, investigating the long-term relationships between people and ecosystems, and developing innovative tools for biodiversity monitoring. They hope to contribute further to conservation, forest restoration, and climate resilience.
By integrating cutting-edge technologies with traditional knowledge, these projects contribute to the protection of Amazonian ecosystems while empowering local communities and promoting equitable, community-led environmental stewardship.
The projects are led by Prof. David Moreno-Mateos (University of Oxford), Dr. Polyanna Bispo (Manchester University), Dr. Manuel Arroyo-Calin (University College London), Dr. Sandra Knnap (Natural History Museum, London) and Dr. Benjamin Coles (University of Reading. The Brazilian co-leaders are Carlos Zimpel (Federal University of Rondonia), Helena Lima (Museu Paraense Emilio Goeldi), Domingos Cardoso (Rio de Janeiro Botanical Garden), Nirvia Ravena de Souza (Federal University of ParĂ¡). This program is funded by the UKRI and the Brazilian Government Agencies CNPq and Confap.
