Alumna Heather Needham (MSc BCM 2022) Wins King's College London Emerging Leader Award

Alumna Heather Needham (MSc BCM 2022), Biodiversity Manager at the University of Oxford and a 2022 graduate of the BCM Masters course, has been awarded the prestigious King’s College London Emerging Leader Award.
This accolade recognizes her exemplary efforts in championing biodiversity and sustainability, as well as her participation as a speaker at COP28 UAE with Nature Positive Universities and the University of Oxford.
The King's Distinguished Alumni Awards celebrate the achievements of their alumni who have made significant contributions in their fields. Heather has made remarkable strides in her career. She previously won the Wellington Medal for her academic achievements and contribution to King’s Geography Society. Her work garnered national attention, including a personal letter from Sir David Attenborough following her dissertation.
In her current role, Heather is at the forefront of implementing the University of Oxford’s biodiversity strategy, promoting nature-positive practices within the organization’s operations and supply chain. At the 28th UN Climate Change Conference, she presented her pioneering work on measuring the impacts of the University of Oxford’s activities on nature. Her career also includes coordinating impactful biodiversity campaigns with Youth and Environment Europe and directing a three part-documentary with the Darwin200 Initiative.
When asked for advice for those aspiring to make a difference, Heather emphasises the importance of starting small. "Making a difference doesn’t always demand big actions. Volunteering with local organisations, participating in community projects, setting up an initiative, and supporting ethical and sustainable businesses are all ways to contribute. Every small action counts and can pave the way for larger opportunities."
Heather received the award at the King’s Distinguished Alumni Awards ceremony on Tuesday 11th of June. Heather has been described as a “true leader whose passion and progress are inspiring to witness”.
“I am thrilled to be awarded the 2024 Emerging Leader Award from King’s College London. This achievement would not have been possible without the guidance and inspiration from my family, friends and the King’s community. Thank you to the dedicated professors in the Department of Geography who have gone above and beyond to support my passion of making a difference in the world. I am grateful to the academic and professional staff at the University of Oxford for their encouragement and the incredible opportunities they have provided throughout my master’s studies and my role as the University’s Biodiversity Manager. I hope this Emerging Leader Award inspires recent graduates to make a positive impact on the planet.”
