REF2021

Today UK funding bodies have published the results of the most recent national research assessment exercise, the Research Excellence Framework (REF) 2021.

The School of Geography and the Environment (SoGE) at the University of Oxford is delighted with our evaluation in REF 2021. We were the largest unit of assessment submitted to Unit of Assessment 14, at 103 people / 95.4 FTE (including colleagues from Continuing Education, Oxford Internet Institute, Oxford Martin School, COMPAS, New College and Nuffield College as well as SoGE), and we are very pleased that a panel of our peers rated our research, its impact and our working culture so highly.

In Unit of Assessment 14 57% of our overall submission (which includes our research outputs, the impact of that research and our research environment) was assessed as 4*, the highest grade available.

We are delighted too that so much geographical work in other universities was also recognised as excellent. In a world that increasingly needs the interdisciplinary insights and skillsets offered by our discipline, it is crucial to have the very high academic standards of the subject confirmed. It is also important to acknowledge the positive impact of geography researchers on a very wide range of policy makers, organisations and communities across the world.

Professor Gillian Rose, Head of School, said, "I am very pleased that our research, its impact and our research environment are so highly regarded by fellow geographers. I'm very proud of the wide range of geographical research that takes place in this university, especially its effective engagement with so many of the environmental, social and political challenges facing the world, which we achieve by collaborating with many kinds of organisations worldwide."
