Professors Patricia Daley, Tim Schwanen and Dariusz Wójcik awarded Academy of Social Sciences Fellowships

Patricia Daley, Professor of the Human Geography of Africa, Tim Schwanen, Professor of Transport Geography and Director of the Transport Studies Unit (TSU), and Dariusz Wójcik, Professor of Economic Geography, have been awarded prestigious fellowships by the Academy of Social Sciences (AcSS), which recognise excellence and impact in the social sciences.

The Academy of Social Sciences Fellowships recognise distinguished individuals from academic, public, private and third sectors, across the full breadth of the social sciences. Through their leadership, scholarship, applied research, policymaking, and practice, award recipients have helped to deepen understanding and address some of the toughest challenges facing our society and the world.

Patricia Daley is Professor of the Human Geography of Africa and Director of Undergraduate Studies. She is also Vice-Principal and The Helen Morag Fellow in Geography at Jesus College, Oxford. She was also co-founder of the Oxford University Black and Minority Ethnic staff network. Her research explores themes including the political economy of population migration and settlement, racial hierarchies and violence, intersectionality and feminist geo-politics, and political ecology, mainly with a geographical focus on East and Central Africa, and also the UK. In addition to her academic achievements, Professor Daley regularly speaks at community events and to the media.

Tim Schwanen is Professor of Transport Studies and Geography, and Director of the Transport Studies Unit. Tim's research concentrates on the geographies of the everyday mobilities of people, goods and information. It is international in outlook, interdisciplinary in scope, and is informed by the thinking in various sub-disciplines within Geography. His research interests also include technological and social innovation, politics and governance, and justice in the transition to low-carbon transport. Tim is one of the editors of Environment and Planning F: Philosophy, Theory, Models, Methods and Practice, the youngest addition to the E&P family, and serves on the editorial advisory boards of five journals focused on transport and mobility. Tim is also a Research Fellow at St Anne's College, Oxford.

Dariusz Wójcik is Professor of Economic Geography, specializing in financial geography. He has published six books and over one hundred articles and book chapters in leading journals and edited volumes, in geography, financial economics, political economy, and sustainability. He has been awarded 15 grants with a total value of over £3.6 million, funded by organisations in the UK, EU, China and Australia. His contribution to research has been recognized by nominations to the editorial boards of several journals. He was appointed a Fellow of St Peter's College, Oxford in July 2007.
