Ed Sandford (BA in Geography, 2020)

Congratulations to Ed Sandford (2020, St John's College) whose dissertation, "Insights from an investigation into phases of accumulation and lateral migration of a linear dune, Northeast United Arab Emirates", has received a special commendation in the Quaternary Research Association's annual dissertation prize.

Ed's project used luminescence dating and sedimentological analysis of Arabian sand to determine the age of the different layers of the dune. This was then modelled against previous studies to help determine how changes in tropical monsoons and ice ages can impact low-latitude geomorphic processes. It concluded that phases of dune accumulation could be linked to environmental changes associated with the end of the last ice age, but that dunes are highly stochastic and sensitive and can react differently to each other, despite similar environmental conditions.

"Research investigating the sensitivity of landscapes to environmental change is needed right now as it can help us to fill in the blanks between how certain parameters of climate change might tangibly be felt by societies globally," commented Ed.

The judges said that the project "illustrated a high degree of competence in addressing the complex issues in the field".

Reflecting on his studies Ed added: "I have always been interested in geography because it's a diverse and applied subject. Theory matters in Geography, but equally important is its application to real-world scenarios. The thing I have most enjoyed about studying Geography at SoGE is the great diversity of topics I've been able to engage with, which have varied from the philosophies underpinning drone warfare to the future implications of national governments' climate policies. It requires a bit of mental agility, but it's been incredibly rewarding! Studying Geography here has definitely expanded my horizons and appreciation of lots of aspects of the world I hadn't been able to experience yet."

Ed hopes to continue his studies and is currently exploring a masters in GeoEnergy or remote sensing.
