30 Under 30: Environmental Leaders
Sam Loni, MSc student in the School of Geography and the Environment, was recently selected by The North American Association for Environmental Education (NAAEE) for its fifth class of 30 leaders under the age of 30.
He will join a growing class of young leaders using environmental education to build sustainable and equitable communities around the world. Last month, Sam spoke at the plenary session of the NAAEE conference about his work and the plans for the future.
Sam combines research and advocacy to support educators in preparing students for the challenges of the 21st century and empowering them to shape sustainable communities. Through Global Schools, he and his team are working with experts in education and sustainable development to curate and develop cutting-edge tools and resources to transform learning.
Sam is based at Christ Church in the University of Oxford, where he is currently studying Environmental Change and Management at the Environmental Change Institute (ECI) and Business Administration at the Saïd Business School, as part of the Oxford 1+1 Programme.
At Oxford, Sam hopes to equip himself with the knowledge, skills, and networks that would enable him to become a more effective leader and help shape the global transition towards sustainable development. More specifically, he hopes to engage with the latest research in the fields of environmental economics, resource governance, and institutional management in the context of increased complexity and uncertainty brought about by climate change.
"Being at Oxford has always been a dream of mine. The opportunity to learn from the world's leading scholars and connecting with likeminded leaders has been quite remarkable. I hope this opportunity will enable me to build on the success of Global Schools, and expand the programme to more communities around the world," Sam said.
The EE class of 2020 will join the global EE 30 Under 30 community of leaders and will receive ongoing support to expand their impact through networking, peer mentoring, professional development, and grant opportunities.
Since 2016, NAAEE's EE 30 Under 30 program has recognized 150 individuals from 34 countries who are making a difference through environmental education.
