Spatial Action Lab: Our mission and core values
The Spatial Action Lab brings together researchers, students, activists/organisers, practitioners, and community members to think through spatial justice issues in Oxfordshire. We approach the idea of spatial justice from a feminist, anti-racist, and anti-imperial standpoint, reflecting upon the intersection of social and environmental (in)justices within the grounded context of Oxford and Oxfordshire. Our core values* offer a framework for ways of working and learning in collaboration, including:
- Creating and producing knowledge, which is intersectional, local, and relevant, and will be put to use to incite change and further collaboration.
- Centring habitually excluded voices and speaking a shared language which is clear and inclusive.
- Starting from a place of hope, where we build community by imagining possible ways forward for what seem like impossible problems.
- Encouraging openness and experimentation, creating spaces where we are able to explore and reflect on ideas and tools for solidarity and action.
- Coming to the table with our own views and experiences while also remaining aware of our privileges and biases.
* These core values emerged out of a workshop with our collaborating partners, and at points utilise the wording from these discussions. We intentionally avoid jargonistic language to reflect the project's aim of nurturing open and accessible conversations that challenge academic and community divides.
