SoGE awarded Gold and Silver at the Green Impact and LEAF awards 2024

At the University of Oxford’s Green Impact and LEAF end-of-year showcase and celebration on the 9 July 2024, the School of Geography and the Environment earned Gold accreditation in the Green Impact awards for the second time and Silver accreditation for our Geolabs in the LEAF (Laboratory Efficiency Assessment Framework) scheme.
The Green Impact awards celebrate the exceptional contributions staff and students make in advancing environmental sustainability at the University. Green Impact is an award-winning programme that breaks down the often complex world of sustainability into practical steps that staff and students can take to improve sustainable practice within their building, department or college.
Highlights of this year’s projects and activities included the Transport Studies Unit's Sustainable Transport Mode Race, our sustainable catering guide, our bug hotel "Air Bee ‘n’ Flea" (pictured above), our plant swap and plant-based pot luck lunch event, and reducing waste by removing personal bins from all offices.
Rich Holden, Head of Administration and Finance, said, “I am thrilled that SoGE has been awarded a second Green Impact Gold Award. It is a fantastic achievement and a great reflection on the School’s commitment to sustainability. This award is the result of a huge amount of effort and creativity from the Green Impact Team, as well a fantastic response from the wider SoGE community to support the projects. We are very proud to celebrate this award and I would like to say a massive thank you to the Green Impact Team for all their hard work over the past year.”
The Laboratory Efficiency Assessment Framework (LEAF) is a nationally recognised scheme aimed at driving improvements in laboratory efficiency and sustainability. Participating in LEAF helps to aligns labs with the University’s Environmental Sustainability Strategy as part of the University’s Sustainable Labs programme.
Within SoGE, Dr Mona Edwards has been working since 2020 under the LEAF accreditation to reduce the negative impact of our Geolabs laboratories on the environment, and together with our staff and users is helping to promote a culture of sustainable science and practices.
We would like to thank everyone on the SoGE Green Impact Team, plus everyone who contributed to and supported the various projects and activities.
