Memories of Professor Andrew Goudie (1945-2026)
Our former colleague and Head of School, Professor Andrew Goudie, died aged 81 on 8th October 2026 in Dorset County Hospital after a short period of illness. A distinguished physical geographer who received many awards (including the Royal Geographical Society’s Founder’s Medal), Andrew was an enormously influential figure in shaping the development of our School. He is remembered fondly by everyone here who had the privilege of working with or being taught by him.
Andrew was a powerhouse in geography at Oxford, in the UK and internationally for over 50 years. Throughout his long career he always cared about people and helping them achieve their best, from the early days at Hertford College to his time as Master of St Cross College, and long into ‘retirement’. We will all miss his insights and wit and have lost a very good friend.
Professor David S.G. Thomas (Former Head of School)
