MSc student in Water Science, Policy, and Management, Lubasi Limweta, from the University of Oxford, received high recognition from the President of Zambia, H.E. Hakainde Hichilema, during the "Zambia at 60 Conference - Standing up for Zambia" event held at the Saïd Business School on 21st June 2024.
Lubasi Limweta, from the 2022/2023 cohort, presented his master's dissertation titled "Impacts of Urbanisation and Land Management on Groundwater Security in Lusaka – Zambia". His research, supervised by Prof. Simon Dadson, Dr. Neil Hart, and Dr. Alex Money, addresses critical issues related to groundwater security amidst the rapid urbanisation and changing land management practices in Lusaka. The President acknowledged the study's relevance during the event and in a subsequent press conference, highlighting its importance in addressing Zambia's current water security challenges amidst an El Niño-induced drought. This recognition underscores the critical role of academic research in solving real-world problems.

Lubasi's Dissertation Research
Lubasi's research is particularly relevant as Lusaka faces rapid urbanisation, reduced rainfall, increased urban flood occurrences, and growing water demand. Using remote sensing and in-situ groundwater data, Lubasi quantified urban growth, determined groundwater recharge, and analysed groundwater levels. His findings indicated a significant urban expansion from 38% to 86% between 2001 and 2023, a 40% decrease in natural recharge, and a decline in groundwater levels by 5.5 to 11 meters across major aquifers, leading to drying boreholes. Lubasi's recommendations include comprehensive groundwater management approaches and policies to protect recharge areas and ensure groundwater security.

Presidential Recognition
During the event, President Hichilema recognised the relevance of Lubasi's research in addressing Zambia's current water security challenges, particularly during the devastating El Niño-induced drought. Upon returning to Zambia, President Hichilema held a press conference on June 25, 2024, where he referenced Lubasi's dissertation, which can be viewed here. He emphasised the importance of the research in formulating strategies to combat the impacts of drought on the water, energy, and agriculture sectors in Zambia.
Congratulations to Lubasi Limweta for his outstanding research and the prestigious recognition by President Hichilema. This acknowledgement not only highlights the exceptional quality of work produced by our students but also underscores the vital role of academic research in addressing real-world challenges.
