Undergraduate Alfie Davis has been awarded the LGBTQ+ Undergraduate of the Year Award 2024. Their work has centred on uplifting LGBTQ+ and Working-Class voices, authoring policy and fighting for change on their behalf. Academically, they recently wrote their dissertation on LGBTQ+ walking techniques as an everyday form of self-preservation, self-expression, and resistance.

Last month, Geography undergraduate Alfie Davis attended an award ceremony at the Pelligon in Canary Wharf, London as a finalist for the LGBTQ+ Undergraduate of the Year Award 2024 (partnered by Clifford Chance). After going through 3 different application stages and being up against over 5000 students, they were named as the Award winner of the LGBTQ+ Undergraduate of the Year Award.

Alfie is a valued member of Oxford's LGBTQ+ and wider community, having been the Senior Welfare Officer of Oxford University's LGBTQ+ Society for two years, the current Co-Chair of Oxford Class Act Campaign, and the College Reps Officer for Oxford LGBTQ+ Campaign.

What Alfie had to say...

We asked Alfie what winning the award meant to them and what advice they'd give to future students. They said, "I decided to apply largely on a whim, and never expected to win! I've been super proud of all the work I've done with Oxford Class Act, the LGBTQ+ Campaign and LGBTQ+ Society, and being elected VP of the SU, and to have all this recognised in such a way, on a national scale is absolutely amazing!

I'd massively encourage any of my fellow geographers to apply next year - there's an amazing range of awards, and as a subject we are some of the most engaged students in building the Oxford community and fighting for social justice within the university. Applying is so simple, and so if there's anything you've done that you're proud about and want to share, just have a go and put yourself forward."

Alfie's future research and work will focus on queer geography, having completed their dissertation about LGBTQ+ people and the socialites and kinaesthetics of everyday walking in London, and how these can function as everyday forms of mobile survival, expression, becoming and resistance/reclaimation.

Congratulations on your success, Alfie!
