The Royal Geographical Society’s Transport Geography Research group (TGRG) has named Jamie Ward as winner of the undergraduate dissertation prize for his dissertation: ‘Assessing connectivity dispersal in the UK passenger aviation network 1998-2018.’

Jamie Ward (BA 2020) recently graduated from the BA Geography course at the University of Oxford's School of Geography and the Environment (SoGE). His dissertation Assessing connectivity dispersal in the UK passenger aviation network 1998-2018 was regarded as ‘impressive and thorough’ by the judges.

His dissertation looked at the geographies of air transport in the UK, examining how the spatial distribution of air connectivity has changed between 1998 and 2018. Air transport geographies have been researched in-depth since the 1990s, with much of this work focusing on the changing spatiality of aviation networks. Jamie’s dissertation goes further and identifies the power relationships shaping the UK passenger aviation network by interrogating the socioeconomic, technological and political drivers of the observed connectivity patterns.

Commenting on his win, Jamie said: “I am very pleased to have been awarded this prize for my undergraduate dissertation. It recognises the work that went into the research, the relevance of the topic, and mostly the excellent teaching offered on the BA Geography course at SoGE. I especially enjoyed studying transport geography, both in my dissertation and the ‘Transport and Mobilities’ module offered by the Transport Studies Unit. I feel very fortunate to have benefited from world-class teaching, and I am now putting the skills and knowledge I developed at SoGE into practice by pursuing a career as a transport planner.”

Each year, the Royal Geographical Society’s Research Groups recognise outstanding work from undergraduate and postgraduate students at higher education institutions both in the UK and overseas. More information about the prize is available on the RGS website.
