ECI and Sustainable Law Programme research underpins landmark case against Brazilian president
On Tuesday 12 October, the non-profit environmental litigation organisation AllRise accused Brazillian President Jair Bolsonaro of crimes against humanity in a submission to the Prosecution Office of the International Criminal Court in the Hague.
Underpinning this profound accusation was an expert report co-authored by Rupert Stuart-Smith, Research Associate in Climate Science and the Law at the Oxford Sustainable Law Programme and Dr Friederike Otto, Honorary Research Associate of the Environmental Change Institute and former ECI associate director.
According to AllRise, this is the first case to detail the full impact that Bolsonaro’s climate harming policies will have on human health and life across the globe. The Oxford Report estimated that emissions attributable to the Bolsonaro administration will cause over 180,000 excess heat-related deaths globally over the next 80 years, based on current climate commitments.
‘The acceleration of the deforestation of the Brazilian Amazon under the government of President Bolsonaro contributes substantially to climate change. This causes stronger and more frequent extreme weather events, such as heatwaves, droughts and storms, sea-level rise, and the retreat of glaciers, with grave humanitarian consequences for communities around the world,’ explained Rupert Stuart-Smith.
