Dr Friederike Otto receives B.A.U.M. environmental and sustainability award
Dr Friederike Otto, associate director of ECI, has been announced as a recipient of the 2021 B.A.U.M. environmental and sustainability award.
The award has recognised scientists who conduct exceptional research in the field of climate, environment or sustainability since 1993. It is also awarded to people who promote sustainable business practices.
Friederike is the co-lead of World Weather Attribution (WWA), an international effort to analyse and communicate the possible influence of climate change on extreme weather events, hosted at the Environmental Change Institute. Through rapid attribution studies, which provide timely scientific evidence showing the extent to which climate change influenced a given event, WWA has helped to change the global conversation around climate change, influencing adaptation strategies and paving the way for new sustainability litigation.
The award ceremony will take place on September 23, 2021 in Hamburg as part of the Extreme Weather Congress. Angela Merkel, Chancellor of Germany, is a patron of this year’s awards. It takes place as a hybrid event and will be live streamed at www.baumev.de.

"I was really happy to receive this award, as it is not given for science per se but for a scientist whose work enables society and industry to become more sustainable. For science to have real-world impact is exactly what I want and it’s also the purpose of ECI."
