Scaling industrial thermal energy storage deployment - global barriers, enablers and policy pathways
Academic Profile
Till Trefzger is a DPhil candidate in the Environmental Change institute and a Clarendon Scholar. He researches the energy system transformations needed to accelerate industrial decarbonisation.
Focused on industrial thermal energy storage, Till explores the barriers, drivers and opportunities of clean innovations amid transforming energy systems. His research takes a system-level perspective, examining the wider value clean technologies can create and the conditions influencing their deployment. His work brings together perspectives from engineering, business and public policy.
Methodologically, Till combines qualitative stakeholder consultations with quantitative energy system modelling. His approach and close collaboration with industrial partners aim to translate academic insights into sustainability outcomes for industry.
Till’s forthcoming publications will examine the techno-economic performance and deployment potential of industrial electrification technologies, as well as policy pathways towards decarbonised industrial heat systems.
Before coming to Oxford, Till worked as a consultant for the United Nations Global Compact. He contributed to strategies for accelerating private sector progress towards the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), with a focus on sustainable finance. Previously, at McKinsey & Company, Till advised clients on clean industrial production, energy technology investments and hydrogen markets.
Till holds an MSc in Environmental Change and Management from the University of Oxford, and a MA and BA in Business Administration from the University of St. Gallen. He also spent a year as Visiting Undergraduate Student at Harvard University.
