Mathias is a DPhil student whose work straddles development and environmental economics. His methodological focus lies on microeconomic theory, inferential statistics, and spatial data analysis. For his DPhil, he uses experimental and observational study designs to jointly evaluate the economic, social, and environmental effects of several agricultural technologies in Ethiopia, Kenya, and Nigeria.

Mathias holds a B.A. in European Studies, an M.Sc. in Public Policy and Human Development, and an M.Sc. in Economic and Financial Research. Before starting his DPhil, Mathias worked with the Development Economics Group at ETH Zurich (2021-2022) and on the Climate Compatible Growth programme at the Smith School of Enterprise and the Environment (2023-2025). Mathias’ DPhil is funded by the ECI African Food Programme Scholarship.
