Political geographies of self-determination: analysing the membership politics of the Unrepresented Nations and Peoples Organisation
Academic Profile
Malachy is a doctoral student researching the political geographies of self-determination. His project aims to analyse the membership politics of the Unrepresented Nations and Peoples Organisation (UNPO), which functions as a distinctive platform of solidarity for communities denied the right to self-determination. The project is grounded at the intersection of critical geopolitics, postcolonial geographies and legal geographies, drawing on archival methods and interviews to understand how self-determination is variously articulated and pursued by UNPO members.
Prior to starting his DPhil, Malachy completed a BA in Geography at the Oxford School of Geography and the Environment and spent time studying at Lund University in Sweden. He has previously worked as a research assistant, cataloguing the UNPO’s digitised archives and researching the development of the Universal Declaration of the Rights of Peoples (2001).
