Dr Xihui Gu

Honorary Research Associate

Academic Profile

Dr Xihui Gu is an Honorary Research Associate at the School of Geography and the Environment (working with Associate Professor Dr Louise Slater in the Water Lab), University of Oxford. He earned a doctorate in physical geography, and is currently engaged in atmospheric science teaching and research. The field of his research interests is the intersection of atmospheric science and hydrology, such as studying weather and water extremes from a viewpoint of atmospheric dynamics, combining global/regional climate model and hydrological model, and investigating the disaster effects of weather and water extremes. More specifically, he currently works to understand the processes of water cycle at global, regional, and local (such as cities) scales, particularly floods and droughts, by using observations, models, and machine learning methods.

Dr Xihui Gu also holds a tenure position at China University of Geosciences since 2017. During 2017-2021, he is an Associate Professor at the Department of Atmosphere Sciences. Since June 2021, he works as a Professor, and leads the Weather and Water Extremes group, which develops computational approaches to understand and model the processes of water cycle. The works of he and his group have been published in the fields of atmosphere and hydrology, in scientific journals such as PNAS, Geophysical Research Letters, Journal of Climate, Journal of Geophysical Research-Atmosphere, Hydrology and Earth System Sciences, and Journal of Hydrology.
