Dr Michel Wortmann is a postdoctoral Research Associate in Computational Hydrology with a research focus on data-driven machine learning approaches to improving hydrological and hydrodynamic models. Before joining Oxford, he was a senior researcher at the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research (PIK) and obtained a PhD from University College London.
Michel's research interests are in hydroclimatic extreme events, their attribution and impact under the influence of climate change as well as novel methods to simulate them. His current work focuses on parametrising and validating regional and global flood models, using data-driven and machine learning approaches. He is currently part of a large multidisciplinary project (EvoFlood) that aims to revolutionise the accuracy of global flood models. He continues to be involved in the development of the hydrological and hydrodynamic model suite of the Hydroclimatic Risks group at the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research.
