"Swakopmund - where the desert meets the ocean"
The conference will be held at The Strand Hotel in Swakopmund, Namibia with poster sessions at the nearby Swakopmund Museum.
Swakopmund is the tourist centre of Namibia offering a variety of restaurants, activities and accommodation options. A bustling town with shops, markets and a steady tourist trade. The climate is exceptionally dry in July with an average monthly low temperature at night of 10°C and an average daytime high of 26°C. However, the collision of the cold Benguela current from the Antarctic with the hot desert air sometimes produces a coastal fog that usually burns off by mid-morning.
Delegates will need to organise their own accommodation. Swakopmund offers a wide variety of options from 5 star hotels and mid-range guesthouses to more simple municipal bungalows and independent hostels. July is the beginning of the high tourist season and so we encourage you to make accommodation reservations as early as possible.
We have reserved a number of discounted rooms at the conference venue, The Strand Hotel. To book these rooms please contact the hotel direct. Further information will be available nearer the time.
We also have a range of discounted and block-booked accommodation throughout Swakopmund organised through SWA Safaris Namibia. To explore the accommodation options here please contact Tanja Sentefol at email@example.com and visit the SWA website available here. The reservations on these rooms will expire around the end of April 2022.
For those of you who require very simple accommodation the Swakopmund Municipal Restcamp offers a range of good value self-catering rooms and houses. Note that only the Moon Valley and Brandberg housing options here include the kitchen utensils actually required to embark on self-catering. Booking at the Restcamp can be made via a number of on-line services.
Swakopmund is not served directly by international or regional airlines. To get to Swakopmund we advise flying into the international airport in the capital city of Windhoek (350 km east of Swakopmund) or the airport in Walvis Bay (50 km south of Swakopmund). Compared to Walvis Bay, Windhoek offers direct flights from Europe and the Middle East, more frequent flights from Johannesburg and Cape Town, and a likely more straightforward immigration procedure.
Hosea Kutako International Airport in Windhoek lies about 30 km outside of the capital city. It receives direct flights from Johannesburg (OR Tambo), Cape Town, Frankfurt Main, and Doha amongst other regional destinations. The main international airlines servicing the airport include South African Airways, British Airways, Qatar Airways, KLM, and Condor. Walvis Bay International Airport receives direct flights from Johannesburg (OR Tambo), Cape Town and Windhoek. The main airlines servicing the airport are SA Express and South African Airways.
From both Windhoek and Walvis Bay a road transfer to Swakopmund is required and we have teamed up with SWA Safaris Namibia to provide this at your cost. Please contact Tanja Sentefol at firstname.lastname@example.org for more details and pricing including options for overnight accommodation in Windhoek where required. More information is also available on the SWA website.
We strongly advise that you contact your nearest Namibian High Commission or Embassy to enquire about visa requirements for conference attendance as soon as possible. Many delegates will require a letter of invitation from the conference organisers and this will be offered to fully registered delegates after registration opens in February 2022.
