Profile

Dr Russell Layberry is a computational physicist working on the Building Market Transformation project. This project, funded by Carbon Vision (EPSRC and the Carbon Trust), seeks to radically reduce energy use in both the domestic and non-domestic building sectors by 2030. Russell is presently involved in the modelling of energy flows and use in domestic buildings. This involves creating computer models which predict energy fluxes across housing interfaces (doors, walls, windows etc.) due to temperature differences in addition to predictions of energy from external sources (solar, heating, appliances etc.)

In his previous position, Russell designed algorithms for rainfall measurement from satellite imagery. This resulted in a model able to monitor Africa rainfall in near real-time by the use of Infra-Red data from the Meteosat geostationary satellite in conjunction with Radar data from the Tropical Rainfall Mapping Mission satellite.

Previous research stints have involved the analysis of concurrency problems in distributed networks, calculation of the ice/rock interface below the Greenland ice-sheet and the modelling of low temperature plasmas for semiconductor surface engineering.
