The School of Geography and the Environment holds an annual Department Open Day with events and information provided for prospective undergraduate students. The 2012 Department Open Day will be held on Friday the 4th of May.

Geography Open Day Programme - Friday 4 May 2012

09:45Doors Open, teachers and parents can drop off students.
09:45 - 11:00Registration in the H O Beckit Room.
Refreshments in the A J Herbertson Room
11:20 - 11:30Professor Sarah Whatmore - Welcome to the School of Geography.
11:30 - 12:00Taster Lecture
Dr Anna Lora-Wainwright - (Title to be confirmed).
12:00 - 12:40Professor Heather Viles - Introduction to the Geography Course and Admissions at Oxford.
12:40Lunch
Students are taken to colleges for lunch by current undergraduates. Please ensure you are back in the department by 2:20pm at the latest.
2:30 - 3:00Taster Lecture
Professor Richard Washington - (Title to be confirmed).
3:00End of formal events. Teachers and parents can collect students. There will be a question and answer session in the Halford Mackinder Lecture Theatre for parents, teachers and students.

All lectures take place in the Halford Mackinder Lecture Theatre in the department.

Available all day:

  • A poster display, university and college prospectuses and current undergraduates will be available throughout the day in the H O Beckit Room.
  • The departmental librarian will be available with information on readings, the library services and online resources.

University Open Days

The School of Geography and the Environment participates in the University of Oxford's Open Days. The University of Oxford's Open Days will be on the 27th and 28th of June 2012 and the 14th September 2012.

Please note you do not have to book in advance with the School to attend the University Open Days; you are welcome to visit at any time during the day.

During the open day the School of Geography and the Environment and the Geography and Environment Library are open all day to visitors and informal tours of both facilities are held.

In the School of Geography and the Environment, there will be course information displays, an information desk and an opportunity to talk to current staff and students. There is also a lecture at 2.30pm in the Halford Mackinder lecture theatre on 'Applying for Geography at Oxford'.

More information on the University's Open Days is also available on the University of Oxford's website. If you wish to visit any of the participating colleges, you may have to book in advance. Please contact the colleges directly regarding this.

Please note that there is no parking available at the School. On open days there may be congestion problems at Oxford's Thornhill and Seacourt Park&Rides. Please consider making alternative travel arrangements.
