Academic Profile
Dr Stanislav Shmelev is an ecological economist. Stanislav's research interests are in the areas of theoretical and applied aspects of ecological economics, macro-sustainability assessment, ecological-economic modeling at international, national and regional levels, sustainable urban and regional development, sustainable energy and waste management, issues of corporate sustainability, complex systems science, as well as issues of sustainable development in the European Union and Russia. Stanislav enjoys applying a range of methods, including environmentally extended input-output analysis, optimization methods, multicriteria analysis tools, life cycle analysis, material flows analysis, GIS, and energy modeling to various interdisciplinary problems.
Dr Shmeleve is a Senior Visiting Research Associate at the School of Geography and the Environment, Oxford. Prior to this he lectured in Ecological Economics at the University of Geneva and Economics of the European Union at the University of Essex. Stanislav has been involved in the activities of the International Society for Ecological Economics and as an owner of an NGO, Environment Europe organized in collaboration with colleagues under it's auspices a major international ecological economics conference in St Petersburg in 2005, as well as a series of interdisciplinary workshops on Sustainable Cities at the University of Oxford and St Petersburg State University. Stanislav is a recipient of a prestigious European Commission INTAS PhD Fellowship (2001) and is a LEAD Fellow (2007). Stanislav was a post-doctoral Visiting Research Fellow at the Open University (2004-2007), and a Researcher at Sustainable Europe Research Institute (2003-2004). Stanislav holds a PhD in Ecological Economics and Mathematical Methods from St Petersburg State University (2003).
In 2008 Dr Shmelev organized Ecological Economic Lectures at the University of Oxford, and is currently leading Environment Europe, a sustainability think-tank based in Oxford, UK.
Stanislav is collaborating with colleagues at OECD, International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), INSEAD (France), the Autonomous University of Barcelona (Spain), Free University of Amsterdam (The Netherlands), University of Klagenfurt (Austria), St Petersburg State University (Russia). Stanislav has given invited lectures at the University of Oxford (UK), University of Cambridge (UK), University College London (UK), University of York (UK), University of Gloucestershire (UK), University of Buckingham (UK), Sustainable Europe Research Institute (Austria), Statistics Norway (Norway), Free University of Amsterdam (The Netherlands), European University of St Petersburg (Russia).
