Academic Profile

Paula has a degree and a Ph.D. in Geology (Universidad Complutense de Madrid) and MSc in General and Applied Hydrology (CEDEX, Spain). She has been working for the last ten years at the "Eduardo Torroja" Institute for Construction Science (CSIC) as a pre-doc and post-doctoral researcher in highly interdisciplinary studies. From study the interactions of protective coatings (anti-graffiti, consolidants, water-repellents) with building materials to implement their use in built Heritage to working in a new type of Portland cement resistant to sulfate attack.

She carried out internships at the Laboratory for Concrete and Construction Chemistry of the Swiss Federal Laboratories for Materials Testing and Research (EMPA) in Zürich under the supervision of Dr Barbara Lothenbach and at Chalmers University of Technology in Göteborg (Sweden) under the supervision of Prof Itai Panas to assess the performance of anti-graffiti treatments in a polluted model atmosphere.

She has been a member of Technoheritage, Spanish Network on Science and Technology for the Conservation of Cultural Heritage and had direct entailment with the protection of the Spanish Architectural Heritage: King Pedro I Palace and The Tower of Gold in Seville (Spain) and Las Huelgas Reales Monastery in Burgos (Spain).

Current Research

Paula is currently working on the project CLEANING HERITAGE funded by the European Commission FP7 Marie Curie Programme. The aim of this research is to implement the use of anti-graffiti and self-cleaning coatings on European Cultural Heritage following the special requirements of porous construction materials through a previous knowledge of the interactions of these products with the substrates and their performance under real long-term working conditions. She is hosted by Prof Heather Viles, head of the Oxford Rock Breakdown Laboratory.
