Muriel Bonjean

Academic Profile

Muriel Bonjean joined the Water Management and Policy Group led by Dr Caroline Sullivan at the Oxford Centre for Water Research (now Oxford Water Futures Programme) in January 2007. In 2003, Muriel completed a European MSc in Environmental Technology and Management in three countries (Denmark, Germany and the UK) and in 2002 she graduated with a French-German double diploma (BSc) in Environmental Engineering, Health and Safety.

Current Research

Muriel Bonjean's main research interests include: the implementation of the concepts of Integrated Water Resources Management (IWRM) and Adaptive Water Management; water quality; human geography; natural resources management; and adaptation to climate change.

Her current research projects include:

  • researching wetland restoration options to improve local water quality in the Orange Basin in South Africa (EU-FP6 NeWater project)
  • participating in the economic valuation of ecosystem services, such as the wetland functions associated with water quality
  • implementing IWRM principles / practices in Southern Africa (EU-FP6 project LoGo Water)
  • developing new and testing existing development indicators (water, poverty, health, etc.)
  • using GIS tools to illustrate water conflicts and development issues.

Muriel previously worked for the Centre for Ecology and Hydrology (CEH) where she researched water quality issues under the EU projects Rebecca and Euro-Limpacs, managed the UK Acid Waters Monitoring Network database and was the UK Focal Point for the UNECE Convention on Long-range Transboundary Air Pollution - International Cooperative Programme on Integrated Monitoring of Air Pollution Effects on Ecosystems.

Muriel also worked for the US EPA (Boston, USA) on wetland restoration projects, participating in the implementation of a coastal zone management plan to restore salt marshes damaged by human activities and for the Massachusetts Institute of Technology Sea Grant Programme (Boston, USA) on marine invasive species, assessing the relative risks associated with invasive species transferring vectors (e.g. ships ballasts and hulls, fish products) as well as those risks related to the life history characteristic of invasive species.

Current Teaching

Muriel is currently teaching wetland management in the 'Catchment Science' module of the MSc in Water Science, Policy and Management. While working for the US EPA, Muriel trained and supervised volunteers for water quality fieldwork.
