Professor Anderson was Pro Vice-Chancellor (Research) at the University of Bristol (2005-9), where he was also previously Head of the School of Geographical Sciences for 9 years. He undertook PhD research at the University of Cambridge and was elected to a Research Fellowship at Sidney Sussex College, Cambridge. He was co-founder and Co-Director of the Institute for Advanced Studies at the University of Bristol. He has held a number of overseas appointments, including two twelve month appointments - as environmental research consultant to the US Corps of Engineers at the principle research laboratory, Vicksburg, Mississippi and that of senior consultant research geotechnical engineer to the Hong Kong Government.
Professor Anderson was a Council Member of the Natural Environment Research Council 2001-2007 and of the NERC Council Audit Committee 2003-2007. He was a member of the EPSRC Technology Opportunity Panel 2009-2011.
Processor Anderson is an elected Fellow of the Institution of Civil Engineers and the recipient of the Trevethick triennial prize awarded by the Institution of Civil Engineers in 1996 and 2007. He is founder and Editor-in-Chief of the journal Hydrological Processes (Wiley-Blackwell), publishing 26 issues per year.
