Academic Profile
Julie is a Research Associate at the School of Geography and the Environment. She joined the department in 2007 working with Prof. Heather Viles in the Rock Breakdown Laboratory. Julie obtained a PhD in Archaeology (Conservation) researching the effects of conservation treatments on DNA at the Institute of Archaeology, University College of London.
Julie is a heritage conservation scientist and accredited member of the Institute of Conservation. Her research interests include: moisture transport through stone, the crystallisation of salts in porous materials, ethics in conservation, the conservation of human remains, and the effects of conservation treatments on biomolecules.
Current Research
Julie has worked on a number of projects with Professor Heather Viles investigating stone deterioration and conservation issues. She is currently investigating the 'greening' of building stone by microorganisms as part of the EPSRC funded project, Climate change, 'greening' of masonry and implications for the decay of built heritage and new build.
