Dr John Bromley

Academic Profile

Dr John Bromley began his career as a geologist in 1969 with the Geological Survey of Malawi after obtaining a BSc (Hons) in Geology from the University of Wales, Aberystwyth. He then gained a PhD in Hydrogeology at the University of Bristol before spending 2 years as a groundwater consultant in South Africa. For the next 29 years, from 1977 to 2006, he worked at the Centre for Ecology and Hydrology (formerly Institute of Hydrology) as a hydrogeologist on a wide range of consultancy and research projects both overseas and in the UK. He joined the Oxford Water Futures Programme in 2007.

Current Research

Dr John Bromley's main research interests are in groundwater resources, water management, and the use of Bayesian networks for participatory water resource management. His current research efforts are centred on the application of Bayesian networks as a participatory tool to help promote the successful implementation of Adaptive Water Management. Of particular interest is the problem of enabling the methodology to be available for use by water managers at all levels.

Having worked in the groundwater field all his working life John still retains a keen interest in all areas of groundwater research, particularly in the problems of recharge in semi-arid environments, and groundwater water resource evaluation issues generally.
