Oxford Environment and Development Innovation Forum

The aim of this event is to strengthen links between the international graduate student body of the School of Geography and the Environment and Oxford-based organisations at the cutting edge of environmental policy and practice. The afternoon will profile the innovative work going on in Oxford and will provide an opportunity for students and presenters to meet and discuss current policy initiatives, ideas for dissertation research and in association with Oxford-based groups.

Meet the Organisations
Earthwatch Institute is a diverse community of scientists, educators, students, businesspeople, and resolute explorers who work together to get the fullest benefit from scientific expeditions. In addition to 150 dedicated staff in the United States, England, Australia, and Japan, Earthwatch supports about 60 projects each year and builds networks of hundreds of scientists, students and teachers.
The Earth Trust is based in south Oxfordshire and manages an estate of 300 hectares, including Little Wittenham Nature Reserve and Wittenham Clumps, a conservation farm, a woodland dedicated to forestry research and Project Timescape, the Trust's visitor centre.
The Global Canopy Programme is an alliance of 29 scientific institutions in 19 countries, which lead the world in forest canopy research, education and conservation. Our work programmes all aim to define and explore the range and economic value of forest ecosystem services and to share our findings with decision-makers in Government and finance. Time is not on our side as the conversion of ancient forests proceeds apace worldwide. Policy and positive incentive mechanisms based on sound science must urgently be developed to preserves these vital forest utilities for humanity.
Best Foot Forward is one of Europe's leading sustainability consultancies specialising in ecological and carbon footprinting. The impacts of climate change and need for carbon reductions are becoming increasingly clear, and Best Foot Forward provide a range of tools and services for carbon accounting.
Sylva is a tree and forestry charity. They aim to revive a wood culture by conducting tree research, working with young people and the general public, and by supporting the woodchain. Their Our innovative myForest service revolves around an online web-map of woodlands, products and businesses. It provides an online management planning account for woodland owners.
LandShare is a small but influential not-for-profit organisation established in August 2008 to be a catalyst for change in the way we manage land and its resources. LandShare translates what is known and thought by scientists and decision-makers into practical solutions; frameworks for action that can be adopted as realistic ways of doing business.
OXFAM is a development, relief, and campaigning organisation that works with others to overcome poverty and suffering around the world. Oxfam works with others to overcome poverty and suffering. Oxfam fights poverty in three ways - campaigning for change, development work and emergency response. Nicholas Colloff is the Director of Strategy and Innovation at Oxfam GB tasked with helping improve the impact of Oxfam's long term development programming. He is presently focused on the 'missing middle' of SME financing and on low carbon development including renewables. Prior to his elevation to this new role (to him as well as to Oxfam), he was Oxfam GB's Country Director in Russia where the programme focused domestically on urban livelihoods and access to basic services and internationally on Russia's resumed global role as donor and climate change actor.

Climate Outreach Information Network (COIN) is a UK registered charity established in 2004 which dedicates itself to helping people to communicate climate change. One of our current programmes is called 'Breaking the Deadlock: Language and Discourse for Effective Climate Change Communication', which aims to develop, test and promote new forms of language around climate change -including words, phrases, frames or entire narratives - that are optimistic, inspirational and encourage change. There are many potential research opportunities for students of the MSc Nature, Society and Environmental Policy course within the Language and Discourse programme.

Arborcarb implements tropical forestry projects that develop key ecosystem assets, which provide multiple revenues. Arborcarb's focus is the reforestation of severely degraded forest land using rich mixes of indigenous tree species primarily for the generation of high quality voluntary carbon markets (validated against the Voluntary Carbon Standard) and sustainable timber (certified to the Forest Stewardship Council standard). Other project activities include improving forest management and reducing emissions from deforestation. In addition to the carbon and timber revenues, Arborcarb projects are designed to integrate sustainable non-timber forest products, develop a supply of ecosystem service certificates, and ensure delivery of environmental and social co-benefits (in compliance with the Climate, Community and Biodiversity standards).
Climate Xchange is based in the Environmental Change Institute at Oxford University. The Oxfordshire ClimateXChange is a new Climate Change project for Oxfordshire. It's about you, your family, your neighbour, your street, your pub, school, business, church all getting 'fantastically imaginative' about climate change.

Oxford Climate Policy Oxford Climate Policy was registered in April 2005 for the general purpose of capacity building in the context of the UN climate change negotiations, and is charged, in particular with managing the Oxford Fellowship Programme of the European Capacity Building Initiative (ECBI).
