Environmental Decision-Making in the European Union: Who Exercises Power?

Join us for our panel discussion as part of Europe Day, chaired by Dr Paul Jepson. Confirmed speakers include: Dr Caroline Jackson, Chair of the Institute for European Environment Policy (IEEP) and former Chair of the European Parliament's Environment Committee; Kaarina Kolle, Policy Assistant at WWF European Policy Office; Professor Michael Shackleton, University of Maastricht, co-author of The Institutions of the European Union (2012); Anthony Teasdale, Director in the European Parliament and co-author of The Penguin Companion to European Union.
Dr Caroline Jackson was a Member of the European Parliament from 1984 to 2009 (South West England), serving as Chair of the Parliament's Environment Committee from 1999 to 2004. In 2008, she was EP Rapporteur on the EU waste framework directive. She is currently Chair of the Institute for European Environment Policy. (IEEP). Educated at St Hugh's and Nuffield Colleges, Oxford, she was a Research Fellow at St Hugh's and has a doctorate in British political history.
Kaarina Kolle works on EU climate and energy policy at the WWF European Policy Office in Brussels. She started her career at the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) Brussels Liaison Office and then joined the Directorate-General Climate Action at the European Commission to work on international climate finance. In addition, she was at Directorate-General for Regional and Urban Policy where she contributed to the macro-regional strategy to tackle environmental threats in the Baltic Sea Region. Kaarina holds an MSc in Nature, Society and Environmental Policy from the School of Geography and the Environment at Oxford.
Michael Shackleton worked for more than thirty years inside the Secretariat of the European Parliament in Luxembourg and Brussels, ending his career as head of the Parliament's United Kingdom office in London. He is currently Special Professor in European Institutions at the University of Maastricht. He co-edited The Institutions of the European Union (2012) and co-authored eight editions of The European Parliament, the most recent appearing in 2011.
Anthony Teasdale is Director for EU Internal Policies in the European Parliament, having served as deputy chief of staff to the Parliament's President, and as Special Adviser at the UK Foreign Office and Treasury. Co-author of The Penguin Companion to European Union (2012), he was educated at Balliol and Nuffield Colleges, Oxford. He is a former Research Fellow at Nuffield and currently Visiting Senior Fellow at the European Institute, LSE.
