Scaling up marine protected area coverage in national waters

The School of Geography and the Environment (SoGE) will be hosting its fifth Oceans Symposium, bringing together experts on ocean policy issues with graduate students. The aim of the day is to address key marine environmental problems, research findings, and management needs.

Three 'discussion circles' will each discuss a key question / issue in more depth. Topics will be confirmed in the synthesis session before lunch, but could be centered on the following:
  1. Coastal site monitoring - what sort of science is needed, and how can the locals help?
  2. Setting up and enforcing sizable offshore protected areas - what political opportunities and barriers exist?
  3. Awareness of benefits
    • How might public engagement with marine conservation be enhanced?
    • What role is the education system playing, and how might it be improved?
    • How might appreciation of the value of MPAs for fisheries rebuild be fostered among fishers?
