The School of Geography and the Environment (SoGE) has retained and reinforced its position as one of the UK's top departments of Geography and Environmental Studies in the results of the 2014 Research Excellence Framework (REF) released on 18 December.
The headline information shows:
- over 80% of our total submission was graded as 4* and 3* (the highest categories of international standard activity). This has been achieved in conjunction with nearly double the number of staff (FTEs) being submitted this time as against our successful RAE2008 submission (53.85 compared to 28.5);
- we are ranked second in the Research Volume/Power index, which multiplies the percentage of our research profile classed 4*and 3* by the number of FTEs submitted, and determines the funding formula used by HEFCE;
- we are the only Geography department to score 100% (4*) for the quality of our research environment; and
- we included more early career researchers (17) than any other department submitted to subpanel 17 (Geography, Archaeology and Environmental Studies), demonstrating our commitment to 'research apprenticeship', career development and inclusivity.
