Academic Profile

Yonique's doctoral research involves an exploration of security sector reform in Jamaica, with special emphasis on the role of the state and multiple actors in the reform process. She is interested in examining the ways in which the state has not only sought to provide security for its citizens, but also how it has retarded progress and undermined the reform process in many ways. She also considers the usefulness and applicability of the human security model for providing policymakers with much needed answers.

Prior to pursuing her studies here in the School of Geography and the Environment, she worked in the Office of the Cabinet in Jamaica as a Research Analyst, dealing with security policy and implementation issues. She also taught courses at the University of the West Indies and the Management Institute for National Development in Jamaica.

Yonique has a BSc in Public Sector Management and International Relations and an MSc in Government, both obtained at the University of the West Indies, Mona Campus in Jamaica. Her current research is funded by the Commonwealth Scholarship Commission in the UK.
