Academic Profile
Marcus is doctoral student at the School of Geography and the Environment, Oxford. He obtained a Master of Chinese Studies with distinction from the University of Edinburgh and University of Glasgow in 2007. His dissertation was entitled 'Vehicular environmental policy in China: command-and-control, market-based, or suasive?' Prior to this he was awarded a BA in Integrated Social Sciences from the Jacobs University Bremen, Germany, in 2005. He is currently also consulting on the 'Electro-Mobility and Climate Protection' project of the German and the Chinese government (German Ministry for the Environment, Chinese Ministry of Science and Technology), focussing on integrating electric vehicles into Chinese environmental policy, particularly fuel economy standards.
Awards and Scholarships
- 2009 - Difficult Language Training (DLT) scholarship awarded by the Economic and Social Research Council of Great Britain for advanced language studies at Peking University.
- 2008 - Full merit scholarship awarded by the British Inter-University China Centre for D.Phil. research at the University of Oxford.
- 2007 - CL Hsia Prize for the most distinguished student in the field of modern Chinese studies awarded by the University of Glasgow.
Current Research
Marcus's doctoral research is on environmental policy in China's transport sector, particularly on institutional influences in decision-making processes and policy modes at the national as well as municipal level. Special focus on electro-mobility and congestion strategies in China as well as the integration of electric vehicles into fuel economy standards.
