Who should apply, and why

The aim of the course is to train future conservation and environmental leaders, academics and policy makers. Past graduates have gone on to obtain positions in a range of leading conservation and academic organisations. Examples include policy positions in government departments (e.g. UK Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA), management positions in global conservation NGOs such as Conservation International and WWF, environmental and conservation consultancies, and international bodies such as IUCN. A significant number of students use the course as a gateway to start DPhil/PhD research and several past students are doing doctorates within the department.
Who should apply?
Candidates from a range of academic backgrounds are accepted, including:
- Natural/environmental sciences,
- Engineering and physical sciences,
- Economics, and,
- Politics, law and the humanities.
Selection criteria are twofold:
- academic excellence, and
- a passion for conservation and academic study, demonstrated through the personal statement submitted with the application and previous experience (e.g. work, education, volunteer activities).
